supporting and empowering individuals and community toward wellness, healing and sustainable health
"Wellness is future-directed and therefore spiritual. It's not living in the moment for the sake of the moment alone. It's living in the moment while understanding that the moment is part of a much greater dialectic, which is where one is going with their life"
Ralph Snyderman, M.D.
What is 'Wellness'?
Wellness is a way of life which modern living doesn't really equip us for. With the polluted atmosphere, dangerous chemicals in the food chain, a health care system dependent on pharmaceutical drugs, and a culture of long working hours, television, fast food and materialism, there is little emphasis on lasting health and wellness.
Without realising it, many of us live in a way that actually promotes illness. We literally become so busy maintaining our lives that we have little time to consider the impact our everyday choices make on our health and wellbeing. To live in any other way requires courage as it means we need to question the status quo, our accustomed way of life, and perhaps even face opposition from family, friends and society.
Cancer is a 'wake-up'
In many cases a disease such as cancer is a 'wake up'. Whereas previously we had been complacent, there is now some urgency to make changes to our lifestyle, and seek out a new way of being which supports our health and wellbeing.
In order to make the transition to 'wellness', at some point on the cancer healing journey we need to address the emotional and spiritual factors which may have contributed to disease, such as suppressed emotions or trauma, unresolved feelings of grief, anger, dissatisfaction, fear of the future etc. Healing is a process which involves acknowledging and integrating all the different aspects of ourselves in a gradual way which leads to peace and acceptance.
Support on the cancer healing journey
What is most important on the cancer healing journey is that you have a good level of support from those in your immediate circle, from health and wellness professionals, and also from a cancer support group. It is the love and support from those around you which will help you to heal more quickly and more wholly.
The Cancer Support Association (CSA), an ethical, non-profit organisation dedicated to assisting people make the transition to 'wellness' as a way of life, supporting people through the various stages of the cancer journey, and providing the services which will help you heal.
There are many people who have to come to CSA who were told by their doctors they only have a few months to live who are still with us today, years later. Their success is largely attributed to making some fundamental changes to their lifestyle and combining conventional medical treatment with meditation, balanced nutrition and positive thinking. They also share a secret: they have maintained hope and continue to feel gratitude, despite their suffering. As uncomfortable as serious illness may be, it can lead us to a broader, more spiritual perspective on life.
The CSA is an organisation which has taken risks to promote a holistic and sustainable approach to healing and wellness. We are committed to helping instigate positive and more holistic changes to the cancer industry, and being part of the global paradigm shift towards sustainable health on an individual and broader environmental level.
